Side Street Beggars

“There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land.” Deut 15:11

Have you ever seen someone begging on the side of the road? Or a homeless man huddled up under a bridge trying to stay warm? We often ignore them, look the other way, and justify our lack of action with the thought that they would use our money to feed a habit. Or worse, we wonder if they are really in need or if they are just running a scam to make some quick cash.

God commanded us to take care of the poor. Our obligation is to help and it’s not for us to determine if they legitimately need the help they seek. I would gladly give a few dollars to a scam artist then potentially neglect one who hasn’t eaten all day. Keep a few spare dollars in your wallet, or a cup of change in your car; the impact you can have on someone’s life is greater than you realize!

“He who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward him for what he has done.” Prov 19:17
