Stop making stuff up…

“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Is. 55:9

Why do Christians make up so many rules that God never intended for his people? Why do we levy requirements that God never commanded? For example, a few years back many churches took the position that going to a movie theater was a sin. Really? All movies are sinful? We’ve long since tossed that idea out the window but similarly stupid “rules” still exist from church to church and new ones pop up all the time.

God makes the rules; our job is to follow them. We don’t have the right, we don’t have the authority, and we don’t have the privilege of making up rules or trying to enforce them on God’s people. God established his rules long ago and handed them down to the Israelites as they prepared to enter the Promised Land. Two of those rules are this…don’t add to and don’t take away from his rules (Deut 4:2).

God’s standards are the highest standards and no one can create a standard higher than his. Anyone who says we must follow a higher standard doesn’t understand God! His ways are higher than our ways. We’ve made up enough, it’s time to get back to the original instructions and toss everything else into the wind.
