You’re right on track…

David may not have implicitly known that the Messiah would be born through his lineage but it seems interesting that in Psalm 69:6 he wrote about being concerned that others who were waiting would be ashamed as a result of his actions. I used to wonder if I have missed divine appointments, if any of my past actions have cause me to miss something or caused a delay of what God wanted to do. I’m sure it’s something many people think about from time to time as they try to figure out God’s plan for their lives. But then I think about the star that appeared when Jesus was born. Many scientists believe that this star was actually several stars or planets that came into close proximity and the combined light from each of them made a very bright star in the sky. What’s interesting is that the universe is like a giant clock so God always knew when that star would appear because he started the universe spinning at precisely the point needed for the star to show on the preselected day. So nothing that anyone ever did could affect the timeline of Jesus’ arrival.

God knows what time it is and nothing will stop him! If you are pursuing him then he will get you where you need to be to accomplish his purpose for your life. You haven’t missed your opportunity! Keep pushing forward!

Completely Consumed

Zeal for your house consumes me. – Psalm 69:9

I want to be totally consumed with the notion of pursuing his kingdom and bringing it to earth. I want to be totally consumed with a passion to see people touched everywhere I go. I want my life to be totally consumed with his presence. It’s birthed as an enthusiastic response to what he has done in me and for me. It can’t simply be a religious notion of doing the right thing. It is so much bigger than that. It is so much more encompassing than a Christian byline. Consumed to see people set free from everything holding them back. Physical freedom. Spiritual freedom. It’s a driving force that keeps me moving forward in the midst of adversity because the prize is so much greater than the cost. Not a prize as a reward for winning but a prize of seeing others walk into a kingdom of righteousness, peace, and joy. There is no greater honor than to carry his presence but it must be combined with the selfless desire to impact lives, communities, cities, nations, and every sphere of influence on the earth. Zeal for your house, for your kingdom, consumes me.

Miracles vs. Blessings

I love miracles. I love seeing miracles. I love watching the expression on someone’s face change when they realize they just experienced a miracle. It doesn’t matter what the category of miracle it is. It could be a physical healing, it could be the elimination of an emotional problem, it could be receiving freedom from a spiritual problem; it’s fun to see and hear about all types of miracles. But here’s the deal, you can’t have a miracle if you don’t have a problem. In order to be miraculously healed from cancer you first have to have cancer. And I don’t know anyone who would ask for cancer so that they can experience a miracle. Miracles are typically a onetime fix for a particular problem and while we often need miracles for ourselves or others, the goal of life should be to live in a constant state of blessing instead of always needing miracles.

Blessing is a whole different animal. People who are blessed financially don’t need to run to God and ask for a financial miracle when their car breaks down. They just use the money they have already been blessed with. People blessed with good health don’t need miracles to reverse diseases because there is no disease to be reversed. And the list of examples could go on forever. So blessings are actually better than miracles because they are perpetual instead of one time fixes.

Pursue miracles when you need them, but pursue blessing even more so that you won’t ever need the miracle.

Religion or Relationship

If you ask a Christian about their religious beliefs one of the most common answers you will get back is a quick quip about how Christianity is a relationship not a religion. That’s quite a true statement but if you ask them what it means the answer will be much more varied. Unfortunately, the sad truth is that most believers never move past the level of an infant in their relationship with God because they have never been taught how to pursue something deeper. Many Christians are simply content with going to church once a week and doing their best to live a good Christian lifestyle. They will get to heaven but they will miss out on a lot more fun on earth if the top end of their pursuit is nothing more than a weekly service. There is so much more of God that we haven’t discovered because we are not taking the time to passionately pursue him in a way that draws greater levels his attention and affection to us. I tend to think that Abraham was probably on a pursuit before God called him to move to a new location and father a nation. I tend to think that Noah had a different relationship with God if he was the one chosen to build the ark. You see, the ones who passionately pursue God get to play a much bigger role in his plan on earth instead of just standing by and watching what happens.

So the challenge is this; start pursuing him with a greater level of passion. Start each day with the intentionality of seeking his presence and spending time with him. Make an effort to make the relationship more than just ankle deep. God has so much more for you but you have to want it and you have to go after it!

Perfect Inspiration

Have you ever spent time with someone who is incredibly smart? There is so much we can learn by listening to these people speak about their experiences, their understanding of complex topics, and their ability to convey that knowledge in a way that others can understand. I had that experience this past week as I listened to some great speakers but then I realized that all of this pales in comparison to listening to what God has to say. In His presence is amazing creativity and inspiration. Sitting at His feet and asking for solutions to problems that are aligned with the purpose of His heart can yield a great understanding to being about the needed solution. Ask Him today for plans and strategies to help bring His kingdom to earth in greater ways and don’t be surprised when He answers…or if the solutions seem to simple.
