Eagles

A few weeks ago, we took a group of people to a local baseball game to enjoy a day of relaxation with friends and ministry partners. The Washington Nationals graciously gives us free tickets a few times a year, and we are able to use these tickets to bless those who have come along side the work we are doing in the region. Before the game started, one of our friends asked God to show us a prophetic sign during the game, and somewhere near the 7th inning an interesting thing happened. The ballpark staff selected a section of seats to receive some free giveaways, and one of the staff members approached me to see if I wanted 2 free tickets to an upcoming concert. No gimmicks. No requirements. Just free tickets. Of course, I said yes, and a few minutes later I was on the jumbotron at the ballpark receiving two free tickets to the upcoming Eagles concert. Eagles typically symbolize prophets or prophecy, so this definitely felt like an answer to our friend’s prayer. And since he was the one who asked for the sign, I thought the two of us should attend the concert together. I think we both felt like the free tickets were just the first part of what God wanted to show us and so, last night, we went to the concert with anticipation of seeing what God would unfold next. I hadn’t been to a concert in many years, so I was interested in seeing what the night would be like. Just after the Eagles took the stage, the band introduced Deacon Frey, who is the son of the late Glenn Frey who passed away in 2016. Deacon was brought into the band to take his father’s place, and he did an incredible job, by the way. It seemed very unique to me that a son would step in and take his father’s place in such a well-known band. I can’t think of any other time where this has ever happened before. As I pondered this, I heard the Lord say that this is now the season where there will be a transference of anointing from fathers to sons and daughters, and we are going to start to see spiritual sons and daughters taking on the role of their spiritual fathers. I think we have seen things shifting in the past few years to make way for this next move of God, and I sense that we are right on the verge of seeing a new generation of leaders step into the roles for which they were created. Get ready! Something big is coming!

What does abiding look like?

I love John 14-16, it’s one of my favorite sections in the Bible. I love the conversation that Jesus has with his disciples (and us) in these few chapters. It seems to me that this is the most candid recorded conversation that Jesus had with the disciples while he was on the earth, and he revealed some pretty big pieces of kingdom culture in this conversation. Being one with God and focusing our love on him is a major focus of this conversation, and it is one that has intrigued me for a long time. What does it look like to really abide with Jesus on a daily basis? I was thinking about this some more this past week while I wondered what it looks like to receive supernatural breakthrough on regular basis. Jesus made a promise in John 14 and 15 that, if we remain connected to him, he will give us anything we ask. And yet, we all have so many prayers that are not yet answered. So, it makes me wonder more about the idea of abiding, and about how some of the prominent people in the Bible achieved breakthrough. I think about the radical encounters Daniel had with the angels who revealed to him the future, or how Ezekiel had some equally incredible encounters, and then John, much later on, had so much revealed to him. I have seen God do some crazy things, and I have had my own adventures with him, but nothing that compares to what I read about in the Bible. Then I think about the other promise Jesus made in John 14 about his followers doing the same, and greater things, than he did. I’ve seen some cool miracles, but nothing on the scale as what we read about in the gospels. So, I’m wondering this week, what does abiding really look like and how much of a role does abiding play in breakthrough? We can’t do anything apart from Jesus, so we need to constantly stay connected to him, there is no doubt there. It probably looks a little different for all of us, but maybe the key to seeing the greater miracles, and the breakthroughs, and having the greater encounters, is to spend a greater amount of time in his presence. It’s not about the miracles or encounters, it’s about staring into the eyes of our King. Everything else is a byproduct of the depth of that relationship. If this is true, I definitely need to go deeper, we all probably do. Join me, and let’s see where he takes us.

Love can make a difference

In the past two weeks I have met two different men who have been shot in the D.C. neighborhood where we minister every week. One wears a cast and a boot on his right leg, the other a cast on his arm. Both were lucky, in some respect, that the bullet only took away a bit of their mobility, and didn’t take their lives, like has happened to many others on these streets. Some see it as a sad reality of their lives, or the unfortunate reality of the area where they live. But it shouldn’t be anyone’s reality, and it’s one of the reasons we are hyper focused on seeing the kingdom of God radically impact this city. We are confident that there are supernatural solutions to the problems people face, regardless of the severity. The same God who can heal an injured knee, can also eliminate violence and anger. These cycles have to end! We know we can make a difference by loving every person we encounter, and we hope that they will not just encounter us, but that they will encounter the God who is able to transform every difficult part of their life with just a word. In Matthew 25, Jesus shared a thought about how the way we treat the least of society, is equivalent to the way we treat him. We won’t give up until we see every life transformed by the power of God. There is hope for everyone in despair and we have, not just the opportunity, but an obligation to our King to love them in the same way we love Jesus. Love really can make a difference!

The power of a word

Do you know how much power is behind the words that you speak? Do you know that, because you represent Jesus, there is a power and authority released every time a word comes out of your mouth? Something I have learned over time is that we can make declarations into or over people’s lives simply from a place of authority and an understanding of God’s will for his children. We can declare favor because we know God desires to favor his children. We can declare hope because we know God doesn’t want his children to live in hopelessness. And the list goes on. Any promise in the Bible that God has made to us as believers is available to all believers, so we can declare those promises, with a God given authority, when we minister to others. We have even seen miracles occur in the lives of unbelievers when we make declarations over them! When God speaks, his words take action, and ours should as well. The key here is to understand the verses in Proverbs 18:21 and 2 Cor. 5:20. When we speak as an ambassador of Jesus, our words carry life and authority. So when we speak with an expectation that what we are saying will actually happen, we will see more miracles occur on a regular basis. Jesus said we would do the things he did, and even greater things. I think so much of this hinges on understanding his promises to us, walking those promises out in our lives, and living as if what Jesus said was actually true. And you know what, it is true! It doesn’t take a lot of faith to be used by God in miraculous ways, it just takes a small shift in perspective and a willingness to take risk. You can do both of those things today. Ask God to shift your mindset anywhere it is not in line with his kingdom and to help you realize every part of your true identity. Then, go out and speak on his behalf!
